The Colour Theory Behind a Great Rug

The Colour Theory Behind a Great Rug

(Without the boring bits. We promise.)

You already know more than you think.

Every time you've looked at something and thought "that just works," that was colour theory. Here's what's actually going on.

Warm vs Cool, Pick a Side

Warm colours (reds, oranges, terracottas) feel grounding and energetic. Cool colours (blues, greens, greys) feel calm and airy.

Most rugs that really work lean into one. Look at the room it's going in, and follow its lead.

The Rule of Three

One colour is flat. Two can feel like a standoff. Three is the sweet spot.

A dominant colour, a secondary, and a small accent. Think: cream, sage green, burnt orange. Three colours. Almost always the right call.

Light Reads Bigger. Dark Reads Cosy.

Cream and ivory open a room up. Deep green, charcoal, and burgundy pull it inward, intimate, intentional.

Neither is better. It depends on what you want the space to feel like.

Contrast Is What Makes It Pop

A pale design on a pale background disappears. Push the contrast between your design and background and the pattern jumps.

Want a statement rug? High contrast. Want something subtle? Soften it.

The Colour That Ties the Room Together

Look at the room your rug is going into. Find the colour that already appears most, in cushions, curtains, artwork.

Now make sure that colour shows up somewhere in your rug. It's the difference between a rug that sits in a room and one that belongs to it.

When in Doubt, Trust Your Gut

Some of the best rugs that have left our studios broke every rule completely.

Because the person making it chose what felt right. That instinct, yes, that colour, right there, is the one worth listening to.

Colour Is the First Decision You Make.

And it shapes everything that follows.

Come in knowing this, and you'll spend less time second-guessing and more time making something that actually feels like you.

One Last Thing.

Our studio has yarn in every shade imaginable.

Seeing it in person, the depth, the texture, the way colours sit next to each other, is a completely different experience from any screen.

Which is just another reason to come in.
